20 members of the DT.Uni project from 8 universities in 8 countries joined on April 24 and 25 at the Faculty of Science in Amsterdam for the meeting about design thinking for an interdisciplinary university. From the University of Amsterdam Frank Nack, André Nusselder and Natasa Brouwer represent the local core team of the DT.Uni project. They have contact with the faculty lecturers and staff who are interested in the design thinking approach.

The DT.Uni project meeting at Amsterdam Science Park was a working meeting with several guest speakers and with inspiring visits to Start Up Village at Science Park and De Waag Technology & Society in Amsterdam. Three invited speakers, all from the University of Amsterdam shared their experiences with design thinking. Katusha Sol and Coyan Tromp from the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies showed how they have implemented the design thinking approach in their teaching courses and in the Future Planet Studies curriculum. Niels Molenaar from the Faculty of Science International Office presented how this department is using a design thinking approach in their work. All three speakers have attended earlier on in the project one of the workshops about design thinking that were organized by the DT.Uni project teams in Dresden and in Birmingham and are using the knowledge that they have obtained at these workshops now in their daily practice.

The visits to Start Up Village and to De Waag Technology & Society were very inspiring. Fruitful discussions took place and new ideas for the DT.Uni project were generated. The project DT.Uni develops now a database of learning tasks that use the design thinking approach. This will be available for the lecturers who wish to implement design thinking approaches in their teaching practice. An e-book about design thinking for lecturers and researchers is coming out very soon and the finishing touch was discussed at the meeting. Based on the knowledge and experiences of the DT.Uni project, the local DT.Uni project teams are now organizing design thinking workshops in their own countries. These all made the DT.Uni project meeting in Amsterdam very successful.

On May 20 and 24 there will be a Design Thinking workshop at the Faculty of Science in Amsterdam. The target groups of this workshop are the education managers and the lecturers with a leading role in higher education. The workshop is sponsored by Erasmus+ and it is free for participants. The number of participants however is limited. Note that there are still several places available for the application. Welcome to apply for this workshop!
