About

Partnership for Learning and Teaching in University Mathematics

Motivation for this project

PLATINUM project will contribute to a culture change towards inquiry based mathematics education (IBME) and improve the balance between procedural and conceptual learning in STEM higher education settings.

Results

- develop an inquiry based approach towards the teaching and learning of university mathematics for a variety of educational practices;
- contribute to lecturers’ spiral development of understanding of inquiry-based principles and practices in mathematics teaching-learning at HE level;
- aim for the development of an international inquiry community of university mathematics lecturers with common interest in practising, researching and further developing IBME

Conceptual foundations

The conceptual foundation of PLATINUM project is presented in the inquiry model in three layers: inquiry in
- engaging with mathematics in inquiry based teaching-learning situations;
- teaching processes, the didactics and pedagogies involved in student inquiry, and their use in teaching-learning situations;
- the entire developmental process in which participants reflect on practices in the other two layers, and gather, analyse, and feed back data to inform practice and develop knowledge in practice.
